The gallbladder is a small pouch located in the upper right abdomen, just below the liver. It stores bile juice, produced by the liver, which aids in fat digestion. When you eat, the gallbladder contracts, releasing bile into the intestine. Gallstones form when bile becomes highly concentrated, mainly consisting of cholesterol or bilirubin. Small stones may pass naturally through the Common Bile Duct (CBD) into the intestine and exit the body. However, larger stones remain stuck in the gallbladder, leading to pain, nausea, vomiting, burping, diarrhea, and indigestion, especially after consuming fatty foods. Gallstones are easily detected through an ultrasound scan, best performed on an empty stomach for accurate results.
If gallstones are smaller than 10 mm, they pass naturally through the CBD and exit the body. However, when they cause severe symptoms or grow larger than 10 mm, surgery becomes necessary. Since removing individual stones is not possible, surgeons remove the gallbladder through a Cholecystectomy.
During a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, the surgeon makes three small incisions (less than 1 cm) in the upper right abdomen, avoiding large cuts. Staplers or surgical glue seal the incisions, eliminating the need for stitches. The procedure lasts 30-40 minutes and remains one of the simplest laparoscopic surgeries.
If the gallbladder sticks to nearby tissue (adhesions), the surgery becomes more complex and may take longer to complete.

Most insurance policies do not cover this surgery within the first two years, except for corporate-provided policies, which cover it from day one. Check your room rent eligibility to avoid deductions, as opting for a higher category room may lead to additional expenses.
