Hip Joint is a ball and socket joint. Damage to the hip joint is caused due to Osteoarthritis, Accident, Genetic Defect, Aseptic Necrosis or Rheumatoid Arthritis. Degeneration of either the socket or the ball, which is the head of the femur bone and goes into the socket, causes pain. The severe pain prevents patients from physical activity and the quality of life goes down. A lot of people think that Hip Replacement means replacing the original hip joint with an artificial hip which is not true. In this surgery the diseased socket and the head of the femur is surgically replaced with artificial materials. Knee replacement surgery can be avoided by losing body weight but the same does not hold true for the hip joint. Though hip joint replacement is not as common as knee joint replacement. The reason for this is that the degradation of the knee joint is accelerated due to obesity along with osteoarthritis while hip joint gets damaged due to the underlying conditions and not so much due to excess body weight.
Total hip joint replacement involves surgical removal of the diseased ball and socket and replacing them with a metal or ceramic ball and metal stem inserted into the femur bone and an artificial plastic cup socket. This stem is fixed into the femur bone either using bone cement or without cement. Without cement is always better than cemented surgery. However if the femur bone is brittle then the surgeon will have to use bone cement to fix the stem of the metallic implant into the femur bone. The surgery for each hip lasts for 2 hours and the patient is shifted to the post operative ward for around 5-6 hours before being shifted to the room. Besides starting Pain Killers and Antibiotics, compression stockings are applied to prevent blood clotting in the lower limbs. The patients are on their feet on the second day after the surgery and go to the washroom with the help of a walker. The physiotherapy team works with the patient in order to return to normal functioning as quickly as possible. The hospital stay is for 5 days and the physiotherapy continues for around a month after discharge from the hospital.
