Happy Patients
The ecstasy of becoming a mother is second to none. You are creating a new life and this process is sustaining the human race on this planet. Our films have beautifully depicted the trauma and the delight of the 3 words – `I am Pregnant’. Trauma for those who get the unwanted pregnancy while Delight for those who are planning to have a family. For the couples who are struggling to get in the family way these are the best words that they have been waiting to hear for so long. Once the pregnancy is achieved then the task is to preserve it and your gynaecologist plays an important role in successfully completing this task. You have to be under the care of a qualified gynaecologist during the nine months of the pregnancy called ante-natal period. You would at best be undergoing 3-4 ultrasound scans during this time to check the growth of the foetus and also blood tests to ensure that the mother is in best of health and capable of giving birth to a healthy baby. The foetus grows in the uterus of the mother and on completion of the gestation period of 36-39 weeks, the baby is ready to come out in the real world.
The process of getting the baby out of the womb of the mother is called `Delivery’. The natural way for the baby to come out of the mother’s womb is to slide through the vaginal canal and this is called `Normal Delivery’. For ages the Normal Delivery has been performed without the assistance of any doctor. It was the midwife who would conduct the procedure but the high incidence of maternal and child mortality has made a case for hospital delivery. However the hospitals have to cater to more serious diseases like cancer, heart disease, liver disease etc. The best place for getting normal delivery done is therefore a maternity home. Maternity home is a smaller nursing home with the facilities for doing both the normal and the cesarian delivery if the need arises.
One of the most important factor determining the type of delivery is the position of the baby. If the head of the baby is downwards towards the vagina then the chances of normal delivery are high. If the ultrasound reveals that the baby is in breech position – meaning that the head of the baby is not downwards then there are some exercises and processes by which the position of the baby can be changed by the time of the delivery. Childbirth classes play a very important role in the occurence of normal delivery. One thing which every pregnant mother must know is that normal delivery is always a good thing for the health of the mother in the longer term. One must avoid going under the knife as much as possible. Our gynaecologists prefer normal delivery any day over cesarian section delivery. When the pregnant woman goes into labour, she is shifted into the labour room where a trained nurse assists you all the while.
The foetal heart rate is monitored through Foetal Doppler. Your gynaecologist will motivate you and assist you in pushing the baby down. As soon as the head of the baby comes out, the gynaecologist will pull out the baby, cut the umbilical cord and hand over the baby to the paediatrician who would take care of the new born. The advantages of a normal delivery are manifold. The recovery time for the mother is much shorter as compared to the cesarian section delivery. There is no cut in the uterus which keeps the uterus strong for any further pregnancies. There is no blood loss and therefore the need for blood transfusion is avoided even if the mother has low haemoglobin count. When no surgery is done the chances of any kind of infection which might be acquired during the surgery is also avoided. Hospital stay is short and mostly the mother is on her feet on the same day and can go to the toilet on her own.
